Andaz Masonic Temple: our not-so-best-kept secret
Discover our most unique London venue
For decades, staff at the Great Eastern Hotel regularly walked past an inconspicuous looking wall, unaware of what lay behind it. During construction, someone looking at the blueprints noticed there was an additional room that had long been kept a secret… but what was it?
Once the wall was demolished, the heavy studded doors that lay behind parted to reveal an opulent combination of Italian marble and checked floors. Descending the temple’s spiral staircase provided a better view of the stunning blue dome ceiling with gold zodiac detail, regal thrones and organ.
Built in 1912 by Charles Barry Junior (the son of Charles Barry, the architect responsible for the Houses of Parliament’s design), the Grade ll-listed Greek Masonic Temple was where Freemasons attended their Lodge meetings. The Temple was first chaired by the Queen’s cousin, Grand Master Duke of Connaught. Above the thrones is the Latin inscription, “Avdi veda tace” (Hear, see, keep counsel).
And now this magnificent room is enjoying a brand new chapter as the venue for a variety of events. Here’s a rundown of some notable examples…
While photographer Markus Klinko was filming the reality show Double Exposure in 2009, he photographed Lady Gaga for Hello Kitty’s 35th birthday. Using the Masonic Temple’s marble columns, gold detailing and striking throne as his backdrop, the pop star sparkled in the diamond-encrusted outfits and dramatic ball gowns made with stuffed Hello Kitty dolls.
Fashion Week Events
Womenswear designer Daniel Blake unveiled his collaboration with Women for Women International in 2013, holding the fundraising event at our glamorous venue. Andaz has been a host to many other events surrounding Fashion Week, but for a private viewing it would be a tall order to find a location as special as this.
The stage for many live music performances, including jazz for the upcoming City of London festival, the Temple provides the audience with an atmosphere that’s hard to forget.
Paloma Faith’s single Can’t Rely on You was released in February 2014 and hit the charts with a funk-soul sound that was co-written and produced by Pharrell Williams. While some might suggest this Grecian backdrop doesn’t quite match up with her retro sound, we think it’s the perfect dramatic setting for her personal style and her video.
Our Temple lends an air of mystery and – some might suggest – a touch of darkness. In our partnership with the East End Film Festival and Propercorn, we’ve got the ideal setting to watch some classic horror/mystery films for an intimate screening – including The Shining, Eyes Wide Shut and Rosemary’s Baby.

Combining all of the above: mystery, glamour, music and cinema, Andaz is hosting Judex – a Murder Mystery Masquerade. Partnered with East End Film Festival and A Curious Invitation to bring this classic to life, the evening begins with a screening of the film in the Masonic Temple. With Art Macabre posing a scene from the film, DJs, jazz performances and a whole host of theatrical entertainment, Andaz will transform into an atmosphere as unsettling and suspenseful as the film itself.

When you think of the Masonic Temple’s majestic throne, it’s hard not to think of the popular TV show, Game of Thrones! HBO must have thought the same because it decided to celebrate the release of its season 4 on DVD, right here. So sets the theme for the pop-up banquet, All Men Must Dine! Guests experienced a Game of Thrones style, 15-course meal cooked by The Wandering Chef (who are creative culinary masterminds Jamie Hazeel and Lalie Jacout), with a carefully selected cocktail menu fit for a king or queen of Westeros. Watch how the event unfolded in this video created by the Associated Press.
Whether it’s a corporate event or an anniversary celebration, why not book a private dining experience here in the Temple for an alternative setting that your guests will be in awe of?
